The New Year often brings a surge of motivation, plans meticulously crafted, and a strong desire to make a fresh start. I was no exception. As 2025 dawned, I felt energized, ready to kick off the year with purpose and determination. My goals were set, my enthusiasm high—and then, life happened. I got sick.
The flu hit hard, derailing what I had envisioned as a productive start to the year. For the first full week of January, I was pretty much sidelined. At first, the frustration was palpable. Here I was, ready to tackle my ambitions head-on, yet unable to do much beyond rest and recover. But as the days passed, I realized I had a choice: I could either dwell on what I couldn’t do or shift my mindset to focus on what I could.
I decided to set a simple intention: to bring my best to each day, no matter how much or how little I accomplished. This wasn’t about pushing myself beyond my limits or falling into the trap of perfectionism. It was about being present and honoring what I was capable of in the moment—even if that meant my “best” for the day was getting out of bed and drinking enough water.
I committed to the idea of 1% progress, embracing the unknown of what that might look like from one day to the next. Some days, progress was as responding to a single email. Other days, it was jotting down a few thoughts for a future project. Each act, however small, was a step forward.
This experience reaffirmed something I’ve long believed: it’s never about an all-or-nothing approach. When we expect perfection or measure success solely by big achievements, we set ourselves up for disappointment. Life has a way of throwing curveballs, and adaptability is key.
By focusing on bringing my best to the table each day, I found satisfaction in the effort rather than the outcome. Even in recovery mode, I could take pride in knowing I did what I could with the energy and resources available to me. It was a powerful reminder that progress isn’t always linear, and it doesn’t need to be grand to be meaningful.
I feel good about what I’ve accomplished—not because I checked off a long list of tasks, but because I honored my capabilities in the moment. This mindset shift has set a positive tone for the year ahead, one rooted in self-compassion, intentionality, and the understanding that consistency trumps perfection.
So here’s to the year ahead: a journey not of flawless execution, but of steady, intentional progress—one day, and one percent, at a time.
