Self-care, Selfishness, and Service

We often praise relentless productivity and self-sacrifice but the idea of prioritizing self-care can sometimes be misinterpreted as indulgent or even selfish. However, the truth is that self-care is a fundamental pillar of a meaningful life, not only for personal well-being but also for the positive impact it allows us to have on others.

At its core, self-care is about nurturing your mental, emotional, and physical health to show up as your best self. It is not about shirking responsibilities or withdrawing from the world; rather, it’s about equipping yourself with the resilience, energy, and clarity needed to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others. When we prioritize self-care, we create a ripple effect, enhancing our ability to support loved ones, contribute to our communities, and positively influence the world around us.

Consider this: just as a drained phone battery is useless to make calls or send messages, an exhausted or unfulfilled individual struggles to connect, contribute, or lead effectively. By taking the time to recharge—through rest, reflection, exercise, or activities that bring joy—you’re not taking time away from others; you’re ensuring you can give to them more fully and sustainably.

Ok, so here is where we flub it up. We confuse these two terms and believe that they are synonymous – which couldn´t be further from the truth:

Self-Centeredness: This involves focusing on yourself as a means to strengthen your ability to serve others. It’s about recognizing your worth and addressing your needs to create a positive feedback loop of energy, compassion, and contribution. Self-centeredness fosters balance and harmony, benefiting not just you but everyone you interact with.

Selfishness: In contrast, selfishness focuses on the self at the expense of others. It disregards the needs and well-being of those around you, creating division and harm.

While self-care involves boundaries and saying “no” at times, it does so with the intent of ensuring you can say “yes” to the things that matter most, including supporting others.

This year, make self-care a cornerstone of your life. The benefits are far reaching and extend far beyond yourself.

Self-care is not a luxury—it’s a responsibility. By prioritizing your well-being, you’re not only giving yourself the gift of a fulfilling life but also contributing to a better world. This year, embrace the practice of self-care as a powerful act of service to yourself and others.

As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Fill your cup first, and let its abundance overflow to uplift those around you. Together, let’s make 2025 a year where self-care leads to a brighter, more compassionate world.

The litmus test of selfcare: This is my favorite exercise to help me focus on self-care.

Ask yourself this simple question: “What makes my soul come alive that is not in service to others?” Then, go do that! As often and consistently as you can.
